Honours with or without Research

A single-major programme with a deep curriculum of core discipline courses, supported by skill development, language ability, and a robust value-based foundation.

A
Compulsory Core

Discipline Specific Core Course

DSCC forms the backbone of the Honours programme. These courses are compulsorily studied as core requirements of the student's chosen Major subject, ensuring strong subject-matter expertise.

B
Supporting Discipline

Minor

A subject from the same broad discipline as the Major, studied with a lesser number of courses. The Minor deepens a student's academic breadth without overshadowing the primary specialisation.

C
Language Proficiency

Ability Enhancement Course

Two AEC courses ground the student in language competency — essential tools for academic and professional life.

Compulsory English & MIL / Alternative English
MIL includes: Bengali, Hindi & Urdu
D
Applied Skills

Skill Enhancement Courses

Designed to provide competency-based, practical knowledge aligned with Major subjects. Students complete 2 SEC courses across semesters.

Sem 1 & 3: SEC based on Major subject
Sem 2: Artificial Intelligence (Science) or Digital Empowerment (Humanities/Language) or as specified in the syllabus
E
Hands-on Learning

Practical / Tutorial

All courses except AEC and CVAC carry a Practical or Tutorial component. These are mutually exclusive — a course with a practical has no tutorial and vice versa.

Inclusion of P/TU components in SECs is decided by the concerned Undergraduate Board of Studies (UGBOS).
F
Human Values

Common Value Added Course

Four CVAC courses of 2 credits each build a foundation in human and social values — a thread woven through the first two semesters.

Sem 1: ENVS (compulsory) + Constitutional Values (compulsory)
Sem 2: ENVS (compulsory) + 1 chosen from a pool of courses
3-Year Multidisciplinary Programme
02
B.A / B.Sc / B.Com — 3 Year

Multidisciplinary Undergraduate

A flexible programme built around three chosen core subjects, enriched by interdisciplinary study, skill courses, a minor, and structured summer internships with multiple exit options.

A
Compulsory Core

Core Course (CC)

Students select 3 subjects as core subjects, each studied with a full complement of courses. This multidisciplinary approach allows cross-domain academic exploration from the outset.

B
Supporting Discipline

Minor

A subject studied with fewer courses than the two main core subjects. The Minor complements the student's core selections without detracting from the breadth of the programme.

C
Language Proficiency

Ability Enhancement Course

Two AEC courses foster language competency critical for all academic disciplines.

Compulsory English & MIL / Alternative English
MIL includes: Bengali, Hindi & Urdu
D
Applied Skills

Skill Enhancement Courses

Students complete 3 SEC courses distributed across the first three semesters, drawing from both core subjects and the Minor.

Sem 1: 1 SEC from Core Subject 1
Sem 2: 1 SEC from Core Subject 2
Sem 3: 1 SEC from the Minor subject
E
Hands-on Learning

Practical / Tutorial

All courses except AEC and CVAC carry a Practical or Tutorial. As always, practical and tutorial are mutually exclusive within any single course.

P/TU components in SECs are as specified in the respective subject syllabus.
F
Human Values

Common Value Added Course

Four CVAC courses of 2 credits each — identical in structure to the Honours programme — ensuring every student develops a shared ethical and civic grounding.

Sem 1: ENVS + Constitutional Values
Sem 2: ENVS + 1 from the CVAC pool
H
Interdisciplinary

Inter Disciplinary Course

3 IDCs of 3 credits each, studied in the first three semesters. IDCs must be selected from subjects outside the student's Major and Minor, broadening intellectual scope.

Each IDC must come from a different subject domain to maximise cross-disciplinary exposure.
Flexible Progression

Summer Internship & Exit Pathways

A 3-credit Summer Internship is required for all students. Depending on when it is completed, students may choose to exit the programme with progressively higher qualifications.

After Sem 2

Research & Dissertation

Students achieving a CGPA equivalent to 75% or above after successful completion of all six semesters may pursue the prestigious Honours with Research degree in semesters 7 and 8.

Eligibility & Entry

To opt for the Honours with Research degree, students must obtain a CGPA equivalent to 75% marks after successfully completing all six first semesters. This ensures only students with strong academic foundation undertake independent research.

Honours with Research

Students choosing the 4-year Bachelor's Degree with Research are required to take up a research project under the guidance of a faculty member.

  • Semester 7: Research component of 4 credits
  • Semester 8: Research component of 8 credits
  • Total: 12 credits of supervised research

4-Year Degree without Research

Students pursuing the 4-year Single Major Degree without the research track complete a structured dissertation and seminar schedule instead:

  • Semester 7: 1 additional DSCC — must be a Project Work / Dissertation (4 credits)
  • Semester 8: 2 additional DSCCs (4 credits each) — at least one must be a Project Report / Seminar
  • Total additional: 12 credits across Semesters 7 & 8

Curriculum & Credit Framework outlined as per the B.A./B.Sc./B.Com Undergraduate Programme structure. For full subject-level syllabi and updates, consult the official Prospectus 2025–26.
